If you are looking to find out about the culture and tradition of the Algarve, the best thing you can do is plan a vacation to experience it firsthand.

However, I’m going to do my best in this short little guide to pull back the curtains over the culture and traditions in the Algarve in the next few paragraphs.

When you think about this region at the southern tip of Portugal, you usually associate it with sunny weather, clear blue skies, gorgeous golden beaches, warm water… However, there IS more to the Algarve than the beaches.

A large part of the local Algarve culture revolves around agriculture. You’ll also find that almost every town in the Algarve will have it’s own “market day.”

Not only will you be able to purchase local fruits and vegetables at these markets, you will also be able to pick up on some local information. Locals are generally very friendly, so ask around to find out what’s going on and where.

In traditional custom similar to it’s nearby sister, Spain, bullfighting is also a large part of the culture and traditions of the Algarve. Westerners generally don’t have the “guts” to observe a bullfight, so this portion of the the Algarve culture remains largely free from outside commercial influence.

Portugal residents are very proud of their “cultured status.” The Portuguese attempt to “capture” their culture into modern art and sculptures. Whether or not you have the ability translate their “art” remains up to you!

Like most other European countries that have been around for thousands of years, the Algarve is rich in historical treasures and culture. Of course, the only way to TRULY get a taste of it is to experience it for yourself so pull out for your planner and mark off a few dates!

Remember, the the Algarve region is a very popular tourist destination, so make you make sure reservations early or someone else will beat you to it!
