The Algarve in Portugal has to be one of the top golfing areas in the world. With 150 km of white sandy beaches, numerous world-class courses, lovely climate and beautiful scenery it’s clear why the Algarve golf holidays are so popular.

Your holiday will be truly memorable when you include visits the quaint towns and villages, dine on fine Portuguese cuisine in the many restaurants, and take part in the plentiful nightlife.

So, which courses should you play on your Algarve golf holiday? While some will undoubtedly disagree on which Algarve courses should make the top five, here is a selection of superb courses for you to consider for your holiday.

With gorgeous views of the Atlantic and the hills of the Serra do Caldeirão, people at all skill levels will find something to suit them at Benamor. A driving range, putting and chipping greens, a restaurant and bar, and a well stocked pro-shop are all included here. Benamor is visually pleasing but very challenging, from its first hole with its Par 4 dogleg that ends in an elevated green surrounded by bunkers, to the last hole, a 512-meter, Par 5 with a beautiful church in the background. This course involves various challenge levels, not necessarily from the bunkers, but rather the large number of mature trees that were retained when the course was established in 2000.

Located in the Western Algarve on the shore of the foaming Atlantic, this 18-hole, Par 71 championship golf course was established in 2002 and features fabulous views of the sea as well as a layout that blends well with its natural surroundings. Five holes involve water obstacles, while the entire course presents a number of challenges. The Par 4, 7th hole has the ocean in the background, and is just one of the many beautiful distractions that make it an exciting and exhilarating playing experience.

One of the most picturesque courses in Algarve is Palmares, an 18-hole, Par 71 course with a view of the coastline, the old town and bay of Lagos. In addition to the normal challenges involved in golfing, the scenery provides many distractions such as flowering shrubs, stately acacia and almond trees, and five holes located adjacent to the Meia Praia sand dunes. It’s a good idea to start at the practice driving range and putting areas where you can ready yourself for the rigors of the 5,961-yard course. At 550 meters and with its narrow fairway, the fifth hole is the most challenging. You will find a bar and restaurant, and trolleys, buggies and clubs can be secured.

Quinta da Ria
A Par 72 with breathtaking mountain and sea views, this course boasts five lakes and more than 300 olive and carob trees as its hazards. The back nine holes are located around the perimeter and they include a very difficult 14th hole that features a 90-degree dogleg and large lake hazard. In addition to a golf academy, a putting green and a driving range, there is a bar in the clubhouse.

Vale do Lobo
Vale do Lobo includes two 18-hole courses, The Royal and The Ocean, and was designed by Sir Henry Cotton. The picturesque setting of the Par 3, 16th hole of the Royal course – close to the ocean and surrounded by umbrella pines, orange, olive, and eucalyptus trees – is one of the golfing holes that is most frequently photographed in Europe. This 18-hole, Par 71 Ocean course was ranked as a top 3 in Portugal by Golf Digest. A driving range, putting and chipping greens, a practice net, a pro shop, and a swimming pool are among the quality amenities on offer at this course.

The fact is, you will not be disappointed with any of the courses we have described above whether you think they are among the Algarve’s very best or not. However, it’s important to keep in mind that these are all highly popular courses and so you should book your Algarve tee times well in advance of your holiday to avoid any disappointment.

Just got back from staying just over the road from one of the best golf resorts in the Algarve Parque da Floresta in the western algarve. A must place to visit for golf lovers and for the rest of the family there is a fantastic spa and swimming pool complex with restaurant.

We stayed in the near by village of Salema. Beautiful working fishing village which is relatively unspoilt. We stayed in a glorious villa on the coast over looking the clean sandy beaches.

We stayed with Simply Salema a luxury villa, privately owned beach front location. The western algarve is perfect for family vacations, or groups of friends wishing to play golf, walk, paint, partake in adventurous activities or simply relax.
